We occasionally have a little time during our travels to do something that isn't on the tour agenda. If the opportunity presents itself we will seek out a local fire station and see what we can learn from them. In Slokkvilid, Iceland we asked a local resident and they pointed toward this tower with communication antennas.
Sure enough it was the fire department.
One of the firefighters answered our knock at the door and was a very knowledgeable guide.
First things first, their engines.
They also have a tanker which we will get to later.
And a better view of the tanker showing its pump for filling it or transfering water to the engine.
The crew cab has space for four with their air packs mounted in the seats so they can easily don them.
Our guide showed us the compartments with much the same equipment that we carry on our trucks. This one has a K12 saw and an electrical generator.
Three inch hose and ramps to protect them from vehicles driving across them.
The next compartment has a booster reel and smaller size hose since
even fit firefighters have trouble dragging a charged large bore hose
around.
Fill hose and nozzles for whatever is required.
The lower half of this compartment has some manual extrication tools on a swing out panel.
The upper half has something that could be quite useful in cold weather.
it is a large flexible duct that can be used to direct heat from the truck to a trapped victim while they are extricated.
Hydraulic cutter and spreaders for when more "muscle" is needed to get an accident victim out.
If in the course of extrication you have to use a Sawsall on metal they said that this blade was "worth it's weight in gold".
When we got home we bought some and it lives up to their recommendation.
A large pump on slide out rails can be used to draw water fro any nearby source.
Another
pump. This one mounted on a trailer and equipted with suction
hoses to permit drafting from ponds, streams, and bay.
The Slokkvilid fire department has responsibility for EMS runs as well as standard fire departmant stuff. Our department isn't responsible for Emergency Medical Services. We are sometimes called on to assist
when an ambulance can't make it to the patient or they need manpower to
move a heavy patient. Turn out gear AKA bunker gear ready to go.
Yet another pump.
This one mounted on a trailer and equipted with suction hoses to permit drafting from ponds, streams, or possibly the bay.
