On our way to the Black Forest we passed this church in Tiengen

A small village at the edge of the Black Forest.

We passed St. Maergen, Baden-Wurttemberg on our way to our hike in the Black Forest.

A traditional black forest farmstead

A little stream along the road

This little building was once a toll house where you would pay if you wanted to go to Hinterzarten about 1.7 miles (2.7 km) away.

As we began our walk up the Ravenna Gorge we passed under this railroad bridge.
Didn't see any trains while we were there though.

On our walk we came on this sawmill mechanism.
Eight saw blades would have moved up and down while a roller advanced the log.
It was originally powered by a waterwheel on this stream.

Quite a crowd started out on the walk up the gorge.

Parts of the trail were steep and some gave up and turned around so it thinned out.

Until only a few were left.

I took pictures of the wildflowers we saw along the way.
You can see them and ones from other places along our Rhine trip here.
Be sure to come back for the rest of what we saw in the Black Forest

When we got back to the beginning of the trail there was a building that seemed to be a clock.

And indeed it was.  Watch the video of the dancers that mark the hour.

A Glas Manufaktur shop next door showing some of their wares in front.

And inside were amazing ornaments.

A shop nearby had a mural commemorating a visit by Marie Antoinette in 1770.

And inside were cuckoo clocks of all sizes on display

A clockwork for the bell in a church probably made in the early 1900's.
The size of the mechanism was determined by the size of the bell.  in this case the bell probably weighed 2.5 tons or so.

I think Jim was imagining taking on the challenge this stein would present

I wandered around and noticed several little piles of sticks which I was told were faerie houses.

Cattle and an interesting door into a room or tunnel.
I couldn't find out what it was when I was there --- possibly a bunker from WW II or a spring house for keeping things cool.

Looking back at the railroad bridge over the entrance to the gorge.
