Strasbourg, Germany

One of the stops on our trip on the Rhine river from Switzerland to the Netherlands.

Other stops:  Basel, Black Forest, Colmar, Speyer, Castles, Cologne, Kinderdjik, Amsterdam, Netherlands towns
Other things along the Rhine
Beer, Viking Hervor, Fire departments, Plants, Wildlife

We walked through the city.

Just like Colmar storks were on nearly every tree.

Artistic decorations were being sold in an open market in a square.

We didn't know that canals were common here.

Take a tour boat if you would prefer that to walking or just for a different view of the sights.

Locks to control the water level and let boats pass.

You would probably get a good night's sleep at this hotel with the river providing a white noise generator.

A closer view of a lock gate.

And homes across the way

Yep we really were there.

A cheese shop had these wheels in their window.

Johannes Gutenburg, German inventor and craftsman who invented the movable-type printing press.
Though movable type was already in use in East Asia, his invention enabled a much faster rate of printing.

This young lady seemed ready for a big day but we didn't see any one else who looked like they were there for the occasion.

The great clock.
It has displays for the moon and planets as well as the day, date and time.

Another tour boat. This one discharging passengers.

An old building in the process of being restored.

The next tour was of a winery.
A church in the distance as we drove along.

That is a good sign we are in the middle of a field of grapes.
What is that on the hill over there?

It's a castle.

Looking forward to some good wine here.

The fermentation starts in stainless vats.
A long way from classic production but we had the opportunity to try the product later and it was good.

Control as much as you can to ensure consistency.
I wonder what the owner's great-great-great-grandfather would have thought about it.

At least this step in small barrels seems to be in line with how the original owner would have done it.
They seem to have fun with the art.

Whoa, these barrels are huge.

We were treated to a tasting with five different wines.
The owner was very proud that since production had been a family business for generations he knew the fields were uncontaminated.
And that he was able to control the whole process of production.
We have fun on our trips.

We passed this church as we entered the next town

On our way to a gingerbread shop.

It did smell good when we got inside

Ginger treats of all kinds.

More churches in the distance as we drove back to the boat.

Back to the boat to continue to Speyer
